Chronic subdural hematoma is a medical condition that may occur mainly in older adults, usually weeks after a mild head injury. This type of hematoma happens when blood accumulates between the brain and the dura mater, one of the membranes that surrounds the brain.
The most common symptoms include persistent headache, progressive mental confusion, excessive drowsiness, behavioral changes and, in more severe cases, loss of consciousness. Because symptoms may develop slowly and subtly, diagnosis is sometimes confused with other neurological conditions, such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
Patients should seek emergency medical care when these symptoms appear, since early treatment may help prevent serious complications. Diagnosis is usually confirmed through imaging tests, such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging.
Over the last 10 days, neurosurgeons from the Center for Neurosurgery and Neurology Care (CEANNE) at Hospital de Viamão performed surgeries on four patients with chronic subdural hematomas. These procedures are important to relieve pressure on the brain and help prevent permanent damage. Treatment may range from clinical observation in less severe cases to surgical procedures to drain the accumulated blood.
Awareness of this condition is essential, especially among older adults and their caregivers, so that symptoms can be recognized and treated promptly.
